Kearan Briggs Arrest
“We will not allow one person’s actions to have such a detrimental effect on the lives of our community.”

Police have this week secured a strict Criminal Behaviour Order against a prolific offender and source of extensive anti-social behaviour in the east of the county.

Kearan Briggs, of Dene Avenue, Shotton Colliery, has made multiple visits to police custody this year, and was recently charged with a public order offence, theft, driving whilst disqualified, and driving without insurance.

After pleading guilty in court to all the offences, the 20-year-old was handed an 8-week custodial sentence suspended for 18 months.

In response to mounting concerns from the local community, Peterlee Neighbourhood Police Team also made the application for a Criminal Behaviour Order, presenting the Magistrate with a raft of evidence of Briggs’ unacceptable behaviour to support it.

The application was granted and will remain in place for two years, meaning that Briggs must not:

  • Use or encourage others to use threatening, intimidating, insulting or abusive words or behaviour in any place to which the public have access.
  • Be verbally abusive to any member of Local Authority staff, Probation staff or Police personnel.
  • Unlawfully contact, damage or interfere with any motor vehicle without the owner’s permission.

Breaching those conditions on any occasion will leave Briggs liable to arrest and could see him face up to 5 years imprisonment.

Sergeant Charlotte Burn said: “Briggs’ behaviour has been the source of a great deal of concern for residents and local businesses, many of whom have expressed to us the serious detrimental impact he has had on their lives.

“We will not allow one person’s actions to have that effect on our community, and this is a clear demonstration that we will use every tool and power available to us to limit that impact.

“The conditions of the order are strict and far-reaching, and will seriously hinder his ability to cause further disruption.

“We will be monitoring Briggs very closely throughout the duration of this CBO, and rest assured that we will not hesitate to use our power of arrest wherever and whenever it is called for.”

The successful application of the order was largely thanks to information passed to police by members of the public, which can be done anonymously via Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111 or at crimestoppers-uk.org.

Sergeant Burn went on to say: “This is only one CBO against one individual, but let it be a message to others who engage in similar behaviour.

“We can and will make further applications to the courts for these orders, and we will do so with the backing and support of our communities.”
