Stolen vehicle recovered in under an hour.

A delivery driver called us after his van was stolen in Durham at lunchtime on Wednesday.

Officers from our Roads and Armed Policing Unit leapt into action and tracked it down in West Rainton where they pursued it through Rainton Bridge, Fencehouses and Houghton-le-Spring.

Other colleagues joined the chase and forced the thieves to dump the van before making a run for it in a housing estate.

The two suspects jumped out of the van mid motion which gave PC Chris Jackson the job of stopping it from rolling into a house while PC Anthony Murphy gave chase.

Just a minute later two boys, both 17, were arrested in connection with the incident after trying to escape through some gardens.

Both boys were taken into custody where they were interviewed by officers before being released under investigation while enquiries continue.

The van was returned to its rightful owner with thankfully only a broken mirror.
