When a taxi driver rang 999 and reported a man with a weapon in Bishop Auckland at the weekend, officers were on scene in 10 minutes.

At around 1.30am on Saturday morning (January 7), the force control room received a report from a taxi driver that a man was wandering around the marketplace in possession of what was believed to be a sword.

Armed and unarmed officers were swiftly dispatched to the area to search for the man.

The suspect was located near the hospital and arrested a short time later by response officers after being found in possession of a plastic sword and quantity of amphetamine.

Robert Stott has since been charged with possession of a Class B drug.

He is due to appear at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court on February 9.
