Community support officer for school attendance and truancy

January saw the launch of Durham Constabulary’s first funded police community support officer for school attendance and truancy.

PCSO Sarah Stephenson has been funded by five schools in the town (Education Village, Gurney Pease, Skerne Park Primary, Corporation Road Primary and Redhall Primary) to help schools identify persistent absentees. This is done through joint visits with council family support officers, offering a visible presence in schools for advice and mentoring, and giving schools a uniformed presence to deter bad behaviour and recognise achievement.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time so far in this role, and clearly see a real difference this has made to school attendance levels. It shows true partnership working at its best,” says Sarah.
