Darlington child rapist jailed for 17 years

A paedophile who abused two young girls decades ago has been jailed for 17 years.

Maurice Holiday denied abusing the girls, but a jury unanimously convicted him of three counts of rape and six of indecent assault following a trial at Teesside Crown Court.

The 75-year-old, from Darlington, was jailed for 17 years, with an extra year’s licence, and was placed on the sex offenders’ register for life.

Holiday raped the girls when he was a young man, threatening one of them with violence and threats to keep her silent.

Investigative Officer John Smith, from Darlington Safeguarding, said: “Holiday is a predator who has shown no remorse for his appalling offending.

“He robbed his victims of their childhoods. They have had to carry this burden for decades and have shown incredible bravery in coming forward and reporting their abuse to police.

“I hope they can now take some comfort from this result, knowing that justice has been served and Holiday is now behind bars for a significant length of time.

“I also hope it shows how seriously we take incidents of this nature, both present and non-recent. It does not matter how long ago the abuse took place, or who the abuser was – if you feel you have been a victim of this type of offending then come forward and speak to us.

“Please do not suffer in silence. We will do everything we can to help and support you and bring those responsible to justice.”

Please contact Durham Constabulary on 101 if you have been a victim of abuse.
