Jail for man who burgled elderly woman’s home while she slept

A BURGLAR who broke into an elderly woman’s home while she slept has been jailed.

Michael Richardson broke into the property in Stanley in the early hours of the morning in September last year while the 85-year-old woman was asleep in her living room.

The 42-year-old, of Kimberley Gardens, Stanley, entered through an unlocked door and told the victim he was collecting rent before stealing £153 from her purse.

Richardson – who is known locally as Turkey Burger – admitted burglary and was jailed for four years at Durham Crown Court earlier this week.

Detective Constable Lisa Saul, who led the investigation, said: “This was an awful crime against a vulnerable woman in her own home - a place where she should be able to feel safe.

“Richardson is well known in the Stanley area and this sentence reflects both the severity of this offence this impact this crime had on the victim.

“Durham Constabulary prioritises the prevention and prosecution of crimes against vulnerable people and we encourage the community to pass intelligence about ongoing crime in their area to us on 101 or anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
