Joint statement from Acting PCVC Steve White and Chief Constable Jo Farrell

 13/05/2020

A joint message from Acting Durham Police, Crime and Victims Commissioner, Steve White and Chief Constable Jo Farrell:

As these unprecedented times go on, we want to reassure the community we continue to take our responsibility to respond to COVID 19 very seriously.

We are in constant dialogue and we are content that Durham Constabulary are responding appropriately and effectively to challenges which policing the COVID-19 pandemic brings.

As we move into stage one of the COVID-19 Recovery Plan we want to thank, you the community for the tremendous effort you have put in so far.

By staying at home, you have helped to save lives and have helped to protect our NHS.

It is only right that people are apprehensive as we move into stage one of recovery, as it would be very easy for us to get ahead of ourselves as we look further forward in the recovery plan.

But we all must remain vigilant, and alert as we work with the adaptations that stage one brings.

We must continue to socially distance to protect ourselves and our loved ones, and save our NHS.

We all want life to return to ‘normal’, we want to see our families and friends, but we will only be able to do this if we follow the new guidance and act sensibly.

Our approach will be the same as before: we will use common sense and discretion to explain the new regulations and encourage compliance.

But our officers will be ready to respond with enforcement when people breach the regulations and put others at risk.
