 Man in court charged with rape

​A man has appeared at court charged with the rape and sexual assault of a woman.


Alexander Neil Dixon appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court yesterday charged with one count of rape and one count of assault by penetration.


The 38-year-old, of Burnigill, Meadowfield, did not enter any pleas during the hearing and was remanded in custody to appear at Durham Crown Court on November 27.


The incident is believed to have happened in a rear lane in the in the Mcintyre Terrace area of Bishop Auckland on Sunday night (October 27) between 10pm and 11pm.


The suspect is thought to have been driving a dark blue Nissan Note around the time of the incident. Detectives would like to hear from anyone who may have seen a car matching this description at the time of the incident.


Detective Chief Inspector Lee Gosling, who is leading the investigation, said: “We have had a dedicated team of officers working around the clock on this case, but our investigation does not stop here.


“I would like to hear from anyone who has any information which they believe could help our enquiries – in particular, I would like to speak to anyone who may have seen a dark blue Nissan Note around the time of the incident in the Mcintyre Terrace area of Bishop Auckland.


“I would also like to reassure the local community that we believe this to have been an isolated incident. We are providing specialist help to the victim, who has understandably been left very distressed by what has happened.”
