Mile with a Smile raises funds for charity

From being pelted with wooden bricks to running around police headquarters, officers and staff had a blast raising funds for charity this lunchtime.

More than 20 officers took part in the annual Mile with a Smile event which is now in its sixth year and sees staff swap their uniform for sportswear as they complete a mile around Police HQ.
This year’s event raised funds for the UK Sepsis Trust which was nominated by staff and Assistant Chief Officer Gary Ridley and Deputy Chief Constable Dave Orford upped the ante by donning full riot kit and allowing their colleagues to take aim with the wooden bricks for an extra donation.
DCC Orford said: “We ask our staff to do lots of things and they deploy all-round the country facing many different challenges so we are experiencing what they do for real.”
The duo survived the good-humoured ‘attack’ before completing their mile in the heavy kit.
Chief Constable Jo Farrell was also upfront, leading the runners around the four-lap course.
Mrs Farrell said: “It’s been great fun to complete the mile today and as always, our officers and staff always embrace the family ethos of supporting a great cause. Well done to all those who took part.”
More than £100 has been raised so far with more donations yet to come in.
