Pelton man jailed for robbing 76-year-old woman of her handbag

A man who preyed upon a vulnerable pensioner when he dragged her to the ground as he stole her handbag has been jailed.

Peter Robinson admitted robbing the 76-year-old woman after she got off the bus in Pelton, on December 20 last year.

He was jailed for two years when he appeared at Durham Crown Court today.

With the help of the community, the neighbourhood policing team and detectives in CID caught the 32-year-old, of Greta Street North, Pelton, using CCTV from a nearby shop and DNA which was found on the handbag.

Sergeant Mick Richardson, of Chester-le-Street neighbourhood policing team, said: “I think it is fantastic that the community took this to heart. It brought them together in their total condemnation of what this man has done.

“Some excellent work by the neighbourhood officers and CID means a man who posed a risk to the community is now behind bars.

“He picked on a vulnerable lady and now he has time to think very carefully about what he has done.”
