Police are re-appealing for information after 92-year-old woman was burgled

POLICE are re-appealing for information on the whereabouts of sentimental jewellery after a 92-year-old woman was burgled in her own home.

Margaret Holmes (Peggy) was asleep whilst the suspects broke into her home in Sacriston, searched her bedroom and stole a number of items.

This included an engagement ring, a gold bracelet bought by her husband when she was just 15-years-old and a ruby and diamond ring that she received on her 40th wedding anniversary.

Peggy told officers how the jewellery was a reminder of her husband who died twenty eight years ago.

DC Sarah Hindmarsh, from Chester-Le-Street CID said: “This incident has affected not only Peggy and her family but the wider community and local officers.

“Peggy is a lovely lady, who has been left very shaken and is desperate to get her personal possessions back.

“This incident has touched lots of people on a personal note, many of us have elderly relatives or friends that this could have easily happened to."

Peggy's story has been widely shared across the county but we are asking the public to remain vigilant.
