Thousands turn out to celebrate 25 years of Bikewise

THOUSANDS of people turned out to celebrate 25 years of Bikewise.

More than 10,000 attended the annual event at Durham Constabulary headquarters, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year.

Having started in 1995, the event has since grown to become one of the North East’s biggest motorcycle focused family fun days.

Among the stars of the show were stunt rider Dave Coates and trials rider Andy Huddleston, the Jamie Squibb freestyle display team, Durham and Cleveland police dogs, Isle of Man TT legend John McGuinness and Triumph collector, Dick Shepherd.

Also on display was the 3Sixty Bicycle Stunt Team, the Great North Air Ambulance and police helicopter. The band, Red 5, also played for guests throughout the day.

Chief Constable Jo Farrell said: “It has been brilliant to welcome so many visitors through our doors today to celebrate 25 years of Bikewise.

“The event has been a tremendous success over the years and has helped our efforts to improve road safety.

“It is also a chance to showcase the many aspects of our work to members of the public, and hopefully inspire a new generation to consider a career in policing.”

Next year’s event will take place on Sunday, July 19, 2020.
