Two arrested after 100-year-old woman is burgled

 07/05/2020

Two people have been arrested after a man and a woman tricked their way into a 100-year-old woman’s home and stole more than £100.

The pair knocked on the door of the woman's home on Surtees Street, in Darlington, at around 6.30pm on Tuesday (May 5) claiming their football had gone into her yard.

The victim led the woman through the house while the man waited outside the property, which is near the junction with Hopetown Lane.

When they left the woman realised they had taken £130 in cash.

A 27-year-old man and 43-year-old woman were arrested yesterday evening (May 6) on suspicion of burglary.

They were interviewed by officers and have been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Dozens of kind-hearted well-wishers have donated money to the victim after a media appeal was issued shortly after the incident.

Detective Sergeant Jo Godber, from Darlington CID, said: “The family have been overwhelmed by people’s kindness and would like to express their gratitude to everyone for their generosity.

“They have decided to donate the money to charity, and have asked that no more donations are made.”

Detectives are appealing for anyone with any information that could help the investigation to come forward.
