Jail for burglars who broke into Newton Aycliffe warehouse

Two burglars who broke into a warehouse to steal power tools have been jailed after being caught by police as they tried to escape.

Ryan Garforth and Elliot O’Reilly travelled from their homes in West Yorkshire to carry out a burglary at a business premises in Newton Aycliffe on May 10.
The pair cut their way through the perimeter fence and climbed up onto the roof of a unit on Aycliffe Business Park, before smashing their way into the warehouse.
But as they tried to get away, the pair were spotted by PC Scott Dobinson and PC Paul Clarke, from Newton Aycliffe police station, who were on patrol in the area checking on suspicious activity.
The suspects ran off but the officers gave chase on foot, backed by the National Police Air Service helicopter and both were arrested nearby.
Following a detailed investigation by the local CID team, Garforth, a 35-year-old from Batley, was sentenced to 20 months’ imprisonment at a Durham Crown Court hearing while O’Reilly, an 18-year-old from Leeds, was sentenced to 18 months in a Young Offenders’ Institution.
Detective Sergeant Clare Lambert said: “This was superb work, firstly by our response officers who disturbed the suspects and made sure they were detained at the scene and secondly by detectives from the Bishop Auckland Volume Crime Team who gathered the evidence for a successful charge of burglary”.
