Warning after scammers pretend to be police

 03/03/2020

We are urging people to be vigilant following reports of a scam in which fraudsters are cold-calling people pretending to be from our cybercrime team.

The scammers are claiming to be from the Durham Cyber police team and offer to conduct cyber security presentations within schools for a monetary charge. They claim the presentations cost £6 per child to run.

We would like to remind people that we will NEVER cold-call people requesting money, and would not charge for our services.

Katie Cain, from our Digital Investigations and Intelligence Unit, said: “We are very concerned about this as we do reach out to local businesses and schools and offer our services, but we do not charge for this and never would.

“We don’t want anyone to be fooled into thinking this is legitimate.”
