A MOPED rider has been taken to hospital with critical injuries after coming off his vehicle.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident, which happened on Whitworth Lane, near Spennymoor on the evening of Friday, September 4.

The 31-year-old was driving a Lexmoto 125cc vehicle which was travelling downhill from Spennymoor towards New Brancepeth at around 7.15pm.

After coming off his vehicle, the rider suffered serious chest injuries and required extensive medical treatment at the roadside before being transported to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by ambulance.

He remains in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

PC Paul Oliver, of Durham Constabulary, said: “We would like to hear from any witnesses who saw the collision to get in touch with police as soon as possible”.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to ring Durham Constabulary on 101 and ask for PC Oliver quoting reference number 0390 of September 4.
