Young Heroes launched in Spennymoor and Ferryhill

 17/07/2019

The search is on for young heroes in Spennymoor and Ferryhill.

That’s as the Spennymoor and Ferryhill Neighbourhood Police Team have launched their Young Heroes scheme for the area which also includes Chilton and West Cornforth.

The initiative looks to recognise young people up to the age of 18 who have gone above and beyond to help others.

Whether that be as a young carer or for a particular act of bravery or kindness – officers want to hear from you!

The team has been visiting schools in the area this week as nominations are now open.

PCSO Hannah Lowes said: “We are proud to be launching the Young Heroes scheme in conjunction with Spennymoor Town Council.  We know Spennymoor has lots of amazing and inspirational young people so it’s important that we recognise their achievements and celebrate their success as an example for others to follow.

“We want to get the message out so will be visiting local schools, clubs and youth groups to talk about the scheme and encourage people to nominate youngsters who deserve recognition.

PCSO Helen Gaskarth added: “A long term goal is to enhance opportunities for young people to succeed in life. To this end we hope to attract funding from local organisations and businesses to provide events and workshops to equip the next generation with skills and experiences essential for them to thrive.”

“Young people have an important role to play in our communities but they get a lot of bad press because of a few who choose to engage negatively in anti-social behaviour and crime. This is a way of redressing the balance by celebrating positive role models and investing in our young people for the future.”

There will be a winner every month before an awards night in March which will be held in partnership with Spennymoor Town Council.

Nominations for this month will end on July 31.

To nominate a young person call 101 and ask to speak to the Spennymoor and Ferryhill Police Team, message them on Facebook or call into Spennymoor Police Station.
