A PRISON officer at a Young Offender Institute has been sentenced for misconduct.

Stacey Sutherland, 27,  of Marshall Street, Barnard Castle, was sentenced at Teesside Crown Court today.

She admitted misconduct in a public office and was handed an eight month jail sentence, suspended for 18 months, following a ‘relationship’ with a young inmate.

Detective Constable Bri Carter and Detective Constable Lucie Holland from the North East Regional Special Operations Unit investigated the crime.

DC Carter said: “Sutherland abused her position as a prison officer by choosing to have an inappropriate relationship with a serving prisoner.

"We will not tolerate any offences within our prisons, and will take swift action against those who undermine the good work of their colleagues and open themselves up to potential corruption."
